Land Clearing & Defensible Space Services in Redding, CA
What is Defensible Space?
One of the best ways to protect your home during a wildfire is to have adequate defensible space surrounding your structures. Removing trees, debris, and vegetation encroaching on structures will ensure your landscaping becomes an ally during a fire rather than an enemy. In addition to helping keep your family and possessions safe, having your land professionally cleared helps you stay compliant with stricter fire safety laws and can even impact your insurance.
JDL Vegetation Management works with home and business owners all over Northern California to help them comply with fire safety laws and prepare for the next wildfire season. Wildfires are an inevitable fact of nature, especially in California.

Defensible Space Solutions
Neglected landscaping, such as dead trees, overgrown bushes, and poor maintenance, poses a risk of wildfire and detracts from the aesthetic appeal of your property. Having adequate defensible space can also benefit real estate transactions, as certain areas may require inspections based on fire hazard severity zones. California Wildfires are Inevitable
Protect what matters now so you’re ready when disaster strikes. We’ll help keep your property safe, compliant, and looking good.
Know the Law
Does your property meet the new 100 ft defensible space requirements?
By January 1, 2023, the law will require 100 ft of defensible space, including Zones 0, 1, & 2 that mandate stricter fuel restrictions closer to structures. 100ft of defensible space starts at the home and extends 100 ft in all directions or to the property line, whichever is closer. As these regulations adapt and change, we’re here to help you remain in compliance and keep you home safe from the catastrophe of wildfire.
-
While outside of the scope of the law for defensible space until Jan 1, 2023, Cal Fire defines the ember-resistant zone as:
“5 feet from buildings, structures, [around and under] decks, etc… and requires the most stringent wildfire fuel reduction. The ember-resistant zone is designed to keep fire or embers from igniting materials that can spread the fire to your home.”
The ember resistant zone has proven to be one of the most critical in preventing homes from being destroyed by wildfire. If you’re unsure of your home or structure’s safety, give us a call and we can help you come up with a plan to protect yourself!
-
Zone 1 extends 30 feet from buildings, structures, decks, etc. or to your property line, whichever is closer.
Remove all dead plants, grass and weeds (vegetation).
Remove dead or dry leaves and pine needles from your yard, roof and rain gutters.
Remove branches that hang over your roof and keep dead branches 10 feet away from your chimney.
Trim trees regularly to keep branches a minimum of 10 feet from other trees.
Relocate wood piles to Zone 2.
Remove or prune flammable plants and shrubs near windows.
Remove vegetation and items that could catch fire from around and under decks, balconies and stairs.
Create a separation between trees, shrubs and items that could catch fire, such as patio furniture, wood piles, swing sets, etc.
For more information on zones, see Cal Fire’s website.
-
Zone 2 extends from 30 feet to 100 feet out from buildings, structures, decks, etc. or to your property line, whichever is closer.
Cut or mow annual grass down to a maximum height of 4 inches.
Create horizontal space between shrubs and trees.
Create vertical space between grass, shrubs and trees.
Remove fallen leaves, needles, twigs, bark, cones, and small branches. However, they may be permitted to a depth of 3 inches.
All exposed wood piles must have a minimum of 10 feet of clearance, down to bare mineral soil, in all directions.
For more information on zones, see Cal Fire’s website.
Protect Against Fires
Fire Smart Landscaping Tips
A fire-safe yard is well-maintained and prepared for potential fires through strategic landscaping choices. To protect your family, home, and assets, choose plants that are less likely to burn, maintain adequate space between them, and regularly remove fuel buildup. For more tips on fire-safe landscaping, please refer to Cal Fire.
Avoid fire ladder opportunities
Low-growth, fire-safe plants near structures
Remove tree branches 6' from ground
Shrubs 3x height from tree branches
Use fire and drought-resistant plants
Keep 2x height between shrubs
Allow 10' between larger trees
Remove fuel sources near plant bases

Frequently Asked Questions
-
In most cases, defensible space is a leading factor in whether home survives a wildfire. Not only does keeping your property maintained add value and keep things looking nice, there’s a large chance that defensible space is the only thing that will protect it in case of a fire.
Many property owners overestimate firefighters ability to actively protect every single home. Sometimes, there won’t be enough firefighting resources available to individually protect every single home. Many wildfires burn so hot that even with enough resources, firemen are unable to prevent a house surrounded by vegetation from being destroyed.
Creating and maintaining defensible space plays a crucial role in lessening the fire’s intensity as it nears your home, giving your house a significantly higher chance of surviving the blaze.
-
According to Cal Fire:
“California law requires that homeowners in the State Responsibility Area [to] clear out flammable materials such as brush or vegetation around their buildings to 100 feet (or the property line) to create a defensible space buffer. This helps halt the progress of an approaching wildfire and keeps firefighters safe while they defend your home.”
That 100 ft is divided into different zones, each of which may vary based on local jurisdictions. If you’re unsure if your property is compliant with legal guidelines for defensible space where you live in Nor Cal, give us a call!
-
Absolutely. Not only does maintaining defensible space make your property easier and safer for firefighters to defend, in the event that there’s inadequate resources deployed on a fire, defensible space could be the only thing standing between your house and an inferno.
In addition, side benefits of defensible space other than wildfire survival include a better looking property, easier routine maintenance, and potential insurance savings.
Protect your loved ones, assets, and peace of mind by making sure your property is ready for anything. Give us a call today and set up an onsite estimate for dialing your property in!
